FundaFynbos – Let’s create a Veld Circle in Papenboom Meadow!

Are you ready Cape Town? FundaFynbos is bringing a third Veld Circle to a park near you! Veld Circles are veld (vegetation) type demonstration gardens, playgrounds and outdoor classrooms rolled into one. Here visitors learn about growing locally indigenous plants and supporting wildlife in suburban parks and gardens.

This year, to mark the start of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, come and 'break ground' on the Papenboom Forest Circle! Located in the Papenboom Meadow at the foot of Table Mountain, the circular garden will showcase locally indigenous, shade-loving forest understorey species and local tree species found in the nearby Newlands Forest. The reintroduction of these plants and trees to this urban park will help restore local flora and fauna; improve connectivity for wildlife to move between the park, Table Mountain and local gardens, and offer an inviting space to learn how to care for Cape Town’s unique biodiversity. The circular garden design has been chosen as a symbol of wholeness to represent the restoration of a healthy ecosystem into a ‘veld type universe’.

Our event, which forms part of the Society for Ecological Restoration’s global MAKE A DIFFERENCE WEEK, will involve clearing invasive alien grasses at the site of the Papenboom Forest Circle in preparation for planting this winter. Dr Caitlin von Witt from FynbosLIFE will give a brief overview on the FundaFynbos project before we start. All welcome!
