Make A Difference at the Idaho Botanical Garden

Join your local plant conservation friends with the Bureau of Land Management Plant Conservation and Restoration Program to help pull weeds at the Idaho Botanical Garden (IBG).
Nestled in the Boise Foothills, IBG is a private non-profit stewarding over 15 acres of land. Like the rest of the Boise foothills, the outlying acreage around IBG is in a constant battle against invasive, non-native plant species. These species include goatheads (Tribulus terrestris), an invasive annual plant growing on trailheads and sidewalks across the Treasure Valley. The seeds of these plants form into spiky nutlets, which become lodged in bike tires and puppy paws. Ouch!
A limited number of trash bags, buckets, weed knives, trowels, and gloves will be available. But feel free to bring your favorite weed-wrangling tools from home, such as gloves, a kneeling pad, hula hoe, weed knife, or five-gallon bucket. Additionally, please dress for a morning working outside in long grass and in the sun (sunscreen, a hat, and close-toed shoes) and bring a water bottle. Supplementary water and snacks will be provided.
Masks must be worn when within 6 feet of others not in your household.
Participation is limited to 50 individuals. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

About the host: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Plant Conservation and Restoration Program was created in response to large-scale wildfires in the Western U.S. between 1999 and 2000. Because of the lack of commercially available native seed for post-fire rehabilitation, Congress directed BLM to establish a native plant materials development program. The reasons for establishing the program remain valid today: There are far too few native seed sources on the commercial market, and natural recovery on public lands cannot keep pace with the increasing frequency of wildfires and other climate-driven events. The BLM Plant Conservation and Restoration Program is working to ensure land managers across the country are able to buy the native seed that will work to restore native plant communities that provide wildlife habitat, ecosystem services, and recreational opportunities for all Americans to enjoy.
