Given the nature of SER’s mission, we feel a unique responsibility to address the environmental impact of our conferences and contribute positively to the ecological health of the host destination. One day of our in-person conferences has historically been reserved for Make a Difference Day, a hands-on volunteer event at a restoration site near the venue. Not only does this give participants a first-hand look at restoration priorities in the local context, it also helps us collectively give something restorative back to the host region.
With the upcoming SER2021 World Conference going virtual due to the pandemic, Make a Difference Day is now Make a Difference Week! SER is extending the traditional day-long activities to a full week, from 5-13 June, 2021 to give everyone, everywhere a chance to positively impact their communities and engage in hands-on restoration projects.
Together, the worldwide restoration community can think globally and ACT LOCALLY via a collective, global restoration volunteer event! Pulling weeds, planting seeds or seedlings, collecting native seeds, monitoring restoration project effectiveness – whatever is most appropriate or most viable at your site! But by working together to host volunteer events all across the globe over the course of one week, we can show the importance of small and large projects alike. And Make a Difference Week starts on World Environment Day, which is also the formal launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
We invite individuals, governments, clubs, schools, NGOs, and SER regional chapters and student associations to organize locally relevant, volunteer-led, and COVID-safe events as part of Make a Difference Week. Registration or participation in the 9th World Conference on Ecological Restoration is not required to host or participate in a Make a Difference Week event. Join us and together let’s show the global impact of SER members, partners, and supporters in collectively acting to restore the earth! Learn more about how to host an event, browse events near you (event map and listing coming soon!), and join us in making a difference!
